United Way of Allegany County
2008 Outcomes
Sometimes when we are asked to contribute to charity, we may not know how much
good we can do.
On behalf of the children, families, and elderly in Allegany County, the United Way
would like to thank you for your support.

383 clients, when faced with an emergency will receive help with food, rent due to eviction notices, utilities,
and/or heating fuel through Associated Charities and the American Red Cross.

Eight homes, housing 16 individuals, will receive needed repairs through NAILS Mission Project,
enabling the homeowners to remain in their homes.

500 individuals will benefit from the Allegany Health Right Emergency Dental Program, allowing them to function normally.

445 adults with Big Brother/Big Sisters, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts provide mentoring to over
844 children, enhancing the child’s self-esteem, behavior, and school grades.

Allegany County HRDC will help 299 women and children with transitional housing, housing placement
and homeless prevention.

951 clients will be healthier for receiving over 2,154 short-term prescription medications from Associated Charities
because of our leveraged purchasing partnership with WMHS (retail value of more than $2 million)

and 4,000 bed nights to victims of domestic violence, encouraging them to live a life free of violence.

42 families with 65 children will be provided quality childcare in a safe environment through the
HRDC, which allows parents to continue their education or obtain employment.

180 children receive mentoring through the Salvation Army’s after School Program that has resulted in higher
achievement in test scores.

The Piedmont Library serves as a community center in Tri-Towns area for 2,400 children and 2,000 adults who rely on the
Library for help with schoolwork, projects, GED classes, college information, copying, faxing, audio books, notary services,
